Cape lengths

Shrug length is a capelet, perfect for spring or over summer dresses in the evening. It's lovely over formal dresses too. There are options for a straight or curved inner edge.  This length is best made with the collar.
Classic length is the length shown on the cover photograph, with Medium and Long lengths having an additional 5cm length to each.
Cloak length is the longest length and is perfect for more coverage or if making a costume cloak.

Suggested Fabrics / Notions

Exterior: Mid to heavy-weight woven fabrics with good drape, like boiled wool, flannel, soft felted wool, suiting, tweed, wool or cashmere twill, velvet. Be aware that some wool coating fabrics have a nap so will need to be cut with all pieces going in the same direction, which may require more fabric.
Lightweight cottons or linen for a spring or summer cape. For a water resistant garment, a soft shell fabric will give a warm, drapey result.
Fabrics not suitable: crisp, hard fabrics like cotton twill, denim, gabardine, polyester.

Lining: I like to use natural, breathable fabrics like cotton and linen however be aware they may catch on the clothing under the cape.
Acetate, polyester, nylon, satin lining fabrics are also suitable.

Notions:

  • Spool of coordinating thread
  • Interfacing for collar - optional
  • Fastening supplies of your choice. If you would like to make your cape reversible, you will need an additional button or two for the reverse side
  • Regular sewing supplies
  • If using slippery fabrics (like minky) or a heavyweight wool (in particular wool blankets), you might benefit from using a walking foot

Fabric requirements

You will need the amounts listed in the chart below (54” or 135cm wide fabric) for both lining and exterior fabric. You may need slightly more if matching plaids/checks or have a directional fabric.

You will need to use 54” (135cm) wide fabric in order to get the width you need for the longer lengths in the M/L size.
