Evergreen Bonnet Size Chart + Materials List

Sizes & Fabric requirements

This pattern includes sizes baby to teen.

You will need the amounts listed in the chart below for both lining fabric and exterior fabric. In many cases you will be able to cut two bonnets from these amounts; however, you will need these minimum amounts in order to make one.  It is intended that your choice of ears can be cut from the scraps.

Suggested fabrics

Due to the four seasons nature of this little bonnet, the fabric options are vast

This pattern is designed for woven fabrics; however, it has also been made from knits during testing with good results using the “Design-Your-Own-Tie” version.  If using thicker fabrics such as fur and the child’s head measurement sits at the upper range of the size you are making, you may need to size up.

Autumn/Winter Exterior: My favourite fabric for these little hats is velvet, followed by light-to-medium weight wool. You can also use medium weight cottons, corduroy, denim, canvas, flannel, suiting fabrics, velour, wool felt, fleece, faux fur or something similar.  Woolen blankets are too thick to make the “Self Tie” version, but they can be used for the other versions if they are not particularly thick blankets.  Felted woolen sweaters can also be used with the same consideration as for woolen blankets.

Spring/Summer Exterior: Quilting cottons, linen, lightweight denim or chambray are perfect for a spring weight bonnet.

Lining: I like to use cotton, linen, flannel or other breathable fabrics next to their skin.  Sherpa, faux fur, fleece and other soft fuzzy fabrics can also be used.
