Four Patterns Now in our New Size Range

Inclusivity is very important to the Twig + Tale team - we want as many sewists as possible to be able to experience the enjoyment and empowerment of making clothes that fit well.

And so, we are very excited to announce that four of our best-loved patterns - the Fable Dress, Driftwood Blouse + Dress, Meadow Skirt, and Fernway Culottes - have been updated to our new size range, which now includes 0-38. This takes our new size chart to a 65" (165cm) full chest and a 72" (183cm) hip.

Read on for more information about the new size range and the updated patterns.

With the release of the Fable Dress last year, we introduced a new size chart ranging from 0-32, with multiple cup sizes.  That was just the beginning!  Since then, the T+T team has been busy behind the scenes working on additional sizes.  Four of our most popular patterns have now been updated (more on that below).  Moving forward, all of our patterns will be developed in the two size ranges, and we will continue to update existing patterns.

Our Woman's/Curved Fit size chart will be available in two size ranges:

Sizes 0-22    (T+T Sizes A-L)

Sizes 14-38  (T+T Sizes H-T)

The following charts show body measurements for sizes 0 - 38 (A-T).  Note that each individual pattern will have its own chart detailing the finished garment measurements.

What is the difference between the two ranges?

The 0-22 (A-L) range is:

  • drafted for a 2" difference between the upper bust and full bust, commonly expressed as a dressmaker's B cup.  Except for size 0 which is a youth size 12 and based on a 1" difference (dressmaker's A cup)

The 14-38 (H-T) range is :

  • drafted for a 4" difference between the upper bust and full bust, commonly expressed as dressmaker's D cup
  • drafted for a fuller waist, and roomier through the upper arm

Those whose size falls into the overlap category (sizes 14-22/H-L) can choose between the two ranges based on their measurements.

The ranges take scaled proportions into account.  As the pattern is graded up, not everything about a pattern increases in size at the same rate.  For example head, neck, arms, and shoulders don’t vary as much in size as bust, hips and waist.

This post has more detailed information about how to choose your size range.

Understanding Cup Sizes

Cup sizes are based on the difference in measurements between the upper bust and the full bust.  For example, a 2" cup is a where the difference in the upper bust and the full bust is 2".

Measuring Cup Size Twig + Tale

Use the following steps to determine your cup size:

  1. Measure your full bust by wrapping the tape measure around the fullest part of your bust.
  2. Measure your upper bust by snugly wrapping the tape measure around your chest and under your arms.
  3. Subtract your upper bust from your full bust, and use the difference to figure out your cup size.

Patterns now available in 0-38 (A-T)

Introducing the first four patterns available in the new size range!  We are so pleased that the Fernway Culottes, Meadow Skirt, Driftwood Blouse and Dress, and Fable Dress have been updated and will be released in September.

The Fernway Culottes feature an easy, comfortable fit with flowy legs, deep pockets, front pleats, and a contoured waistband with channeled elastic back.  The pattern includes options for three different lengths (shorts, calf-length, and full-length), a stretchy "sensory" waistband, as well as optional ties.

The Meadow Skirt is our go-to skirt for all occasions.  Dressed up or down, it offers a comfortable fit with a contoured waistband with channeled elastic back, deep pockets, and your choice of gathers or pleats.  Choose from four different lengths, an optional "sensory" waistband, and waist ties.  Be sure to check out the Button Front hack on the blog too!

The Driftwood Blouse and Dress features a gently-gathered neckline with button or tie closure, and options for short or long sleeves.  Includes an adaptive add-on for a button front closure and an A-Line Dress hack too!

The Fable Dress features a princess-seam bodice, functional button front (though it can pull over the head without fasteners too), gently gathered skirt, and deep inseam pockets.  For year-round wear, the pattern includes options for three sleeve lengths and a faced or fully-lined bodice.  Choose the optional back elastic casing or waist ties for even more looks! Also includes an Adaptive Add-on of Pre-adjusted pattern pieces for post-mastectomy.

We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who helped with the development of the new size range, including our in-person fit models, quality review testers, and photo and sharing team.  Your feedback and suggestions have been invaluable for creating high-quality patterns.  It has been such a pleasure to work with everyone!  Thanks also to the other designers who have graciously shared their research, such as this comprehensive survey by Helens Closet.

We are very excited about the new size range and hope that you are too.  Making patterns available to include more people is very important to us, and moving forward all new patterns will be released in the 0-22 (A-L) and 14-38 (H-T) ranges in print-at-home, A0 (copyshop), and projector formats.
