Make old things new again! Twig & Tale patterns pair wonderfully with recycled fabrics. Look to woollen blankets, gently used corduroy or wool trousers and leather/suede garments for inspiration.

Gosh... I just love it.

The cape is perfection. I sewed up one for my daughter’s cat costume and autumn outerwear and I “just can’t even” with the cuteness. It’s adorable, easy to sew and just fantastic with all the options.

Bunny version of Wild Things Cape

As a relative beginner I found this pattern very intuitive and easy to follow. I sewed this up for my four-year old daughter for the carnival celebration at her kindergarten here in France. I used a pre-quilted jersey fabric for the exterior and a light cotton fabric for the lining. I used iron on interfacing for both the lining and the exterior fabric on the ears, to add just a bit more stiffness. I went with two cute fabric covered bunny buttons for the fastening at the front and for the paw marks on the pockets (those little toes needed to be hand-sewn on!) I used felt. I am super happy with the result as the bunny cape looks both classy and cute and my daughter loves wearing it. I did not take advantage of the layered print out option as I like to trace my patterns and keep all the sizes on one original for future use.

My 6 yr. old Granddaughter LOVES this cape. I used a RED sweatshirt material with Red Riding Hood print lining. She looked adorable!!

The baby sizes are intended for photography purposes and must be used with close adult supervision. They are more suitable for a baby who is capable of sitting.  The baby sizes have a very generous hood, as it is intended that a beanie or other close-fitting head covering will be worn underneath if cold.  Tails are not for baby sizes.

Suggested fabrics

Exterior:  I like to use wool blends, but most woven fabrics with a reasonable drape will work well, including fleece and WindPro fleece, velvet, soft denim, or corduroy.  Lightweight cottons or linens are suitable for a spring or summer cape.  It can also be made in waterproof fabric (PUL, laminated cotton, coated nylon, etc.) as a rain cape.

Lining: I like to use cotton, linen or other breathable fabric, but you can use regular lining fabric if you wish.

Fabric requirements

You will need the amounts listed in the chart below (44” or 115cm wide fabric)  for both lining fabric and exterior fabric for the Capelet and Classic lengths.  You may need more if matching plaids/checks or if you have a directional fabric. If adding a tail, factor in another 1/4 yard or metre.  It is intended that your choice of ears can be cut from the scraps - however, if making a bunny, doggie or giraffe, you may need to factor in a tiny bit more fabric.

To make the Cloak length in the larger sizes you will need a minimum fabric width of 54” or 135cm.  If you wish to lengthen the cloak length further, you will require even wider fabric!
