Sizing of the hat is for ripstop nylon/vinyl-type fabrics.

If you are using softshell or other thicker fabrics, and the wearer measures exactly to a size, for example, a 19.5" (M) head measurement, it is recommended to sew the next size up of 20.5" (L).

***If you would like to use a contrasting fabric for the neck guard piece, you will need 6" (15cm) of fabric.  The reason for this would be if you wished to use something soft against the skin rather than a waterproof fabric.

Suggested Fabrics

Waterproof fabric can be challenging to choose from, as there is a vast array available with many different properties.  This hat is versatile in terms of the fabric used, and can be made in a light to medium weight.  We don't recommend using upholstery fabrics.  Look for fabrics that are durable and if possible, breathable.

Manmade Fabrics:  Nylon, ripstop nylon, parka nylon, aluminium-backed nylon, soft shell, light-weight vinyl, PUL.  We recommend using 100% polyester thread with these fabrics.

Natural Fabrics: Oilskin, dry oilcloth, regular oilcloth, waxed canvas.  Regular seam-sealing tape may not stick to these fabrics - wax the seams for a complete waterproofing if desired.

Supplies & Notions

  • Spool of coordinating thread.
  • Up to 16" (40cm) of 3/4" (2cm) wide elastic - length depends on whether or not you sew the neck guard.
  • Up to 5" (13cm) of 3/4" (2cm) wide hook + loop tape.
  • Needles: 80/12 needle for light-weight fabric, 90/14 for medium-weight fabric.  If your machine struggles to get through multiple layers, then use a microtex or denim needle.
  • For Sealing Seams: seam-sealing tape, baking paper (parchment paper), iron, and scissors.  If using an oilcloth, then beeswax for sealing.
  • Non-stick sewing foot.
