Introducing the Breeze Shirt

Introducing the Breeze Shirt

We are so pleased to introduce our latest pattern, the Breeze Shirt.  A quintessential summer top, the Breeze Shirt is simple and casual, made for the warm, relaxed days of summer.  Long sleeves protect delicate skin from the harsh sun, and an easy, loose fit ensures comfort.

While we initially designed this top with boys in mind, it suits girls equally well.  The Breeze Shirt will be completely at home playing in the sand at the beach or exploring a woodland path in the forest.  This is the top we will reach for to dress our little ones for their summer adventures.

The Breeze Shirt is a loose-fitting pullover top with a mandarin collar, dropped shoulders, and an easy, comfortable fit.  The pattern includes two sleeve lengths - make it with long sleeves to protect delicate skin from the sun, or with short sleeves.  Optional sleeve tabs are functional for securing rolled up sleeves and look great too.

Designed to be sewn with lightweight woven fabrics, the front slit is deep enough that the shirt can pull over the head.  Leave the front slit open, or close it with small buttons and loops, or grommets and laces.

The pattern tutorial includes an intermediate-level option for sewing bound side splits, a lovely detail that adds to the airy, beachy look.

The Breeze pattern offers a wide range of sizes from 12-18 months to 10 years.  The PDF pattern includes options for printing A4, US Letter, and A0 formats.  The layered file allows you to print just the size(s) you need.  The tutorial is clear and thorough, offering lots of photos, video clips, and helpful tips to guide you through the entire project.

One of the really lovely features of the Breeze Shirt is that it is finished with French seams.  This technique encloses all raw fabric edges, eliminating the need to overlock or zigzag seam allowances, and gives a beautiful finish to the inside of the garment.

The Breeze tutorial will guide you through the entire process, and we are sure that you will be thrilled with the professional-looking finish that the French seams provide.  Curious to see the technique used for sewing French seams?  Have a look at our French seam primer.

The Breeze Shirt is at its best when made with light, airy fabric with good drape such as lightweight linen, cotton lawn, or muslin.  Natural fibres feel soft and light next to the skin and are ideal for warm weather.  Have a look at this post for more information about choosing fabric for the Breeze Shirt.

We hope that you enjoy sewing the Breeze Shirt - we really do feel it is an ideal summer top for children!  Please join us at the Twig + Tale Facebook group to look for inspiration, ask questions, and of course, share photos of your lovely creations.
