Learn to sew - Grow your sewing skills with T+T patterns

If you're looking for sewing patterns that will grow with your skills, you've come to the right place. We're passionate about creating patterns for all skill levels, from complete beginners trying a pattern for the first time, to sewists looking to "level up" their skills by trying new techniques and more ambitious projects. Every pattern you sew will give you a chance to learn new skills that can be applied to your next project, and the next! 

Our pattern tutorials are designed to meet you where you are. With step-by-step instructions in multiple formats, you can follow along in the way that works best for you. Nearly all of our patterns include a video class - almost like having a sewing instructor sitting right beside you, guiding you through each step. 

Here are some of our favourite projects, for all stages of your sewing journey.

Beginner patterns

These patterns are suitable for sewists who are just starting out. They use a limited number of pattern pieces and basic sewing techniques. With detailed tutorials, these are a suitable choice for a first foray into sewing with a pattern.

Starting with a simple pattern will give you a chance to gain familiarity with the feel of using a sewing machine, handling fabric, pressing seams - those foundational skills needed to build confidence.

Pixie Hat - the perfect choice for a first sewing project, the Pixie Hat is a simple and satisfying project with a charming result. Using basic sewing techniques, you'll create a fully lined hat - all the seams are enclosed, so it has a beautiful, neat finish.

Tree Climber Shorts + Pantaloons - simple, pull-on shorts for children, this is a great introduction to garment sewing and a building block towards sewing more complex shorts and pants.

Traveller Cape - a classic cape for children or adults. If you're feeling adventurous, try the animal add-ons too! Sew a fully-lined cape with a beautiful finish.

You'll learn the following skills:

  • Sew gentle curves
  • Sew a collar or hood
  • How to fully line a garment

Adventurous beginner patterns

These patterns are the perfect next step for those who have completed a couple of beginner projects and would like to continue growing their sewing skills. We think of these as our skill builder patterns. New techniques are gently introduced, supported by detailed tutorials that will make you feel confident and excited to try new patterns. 

Fortunately, the majority of the patterns in our collection are rated "adventurous beginner" - perfect for learning and creating a gorgeous handmade wardrobe. 

Meadow Skirt digital sewing pattern from Twig and Tale


Meadow Skirt - a versatile skirt with a flat front waistband, the Meadow is a perfect "next step" sew with an amazing looking result. It comes together beautifully and introduces so many useful techniques, such as:

  • sewing pleats or gathers
  • sewing pocket bags
  • creating a flat front/channeled elastic back waistband
  • creating a lovely, neat hem
Pixie Coat - sewing outerwear may seem like an advanced project, but our coat patterns make it completely achievable for adventurous beginners. The Pixie Coat tutorial will teach you how to:
  • sew a fully lined coat
  • sew a neat, faced lining
  • sew button closures with loops or buttonholes

Scenic Top - a woven pullover top that will guide you through creating a truly satisfying neckline finish. This wardrobe staple opens up so many possibilities, including a variety of sleeve styles. You'll learn how to:

  • set in a sleeve
  • work with bias binding to create a clean neckline
  • sew bust darts (adult version)
  • sew a curved hem

Leaf Satchel digital sewing pattern from Twig and Tale

Foraging Satchel and Leaf Satchel - these patterns are a lovely introduction to sewing bags - no previous bag making experience needed! Choose from the solid-flap Foraging Satchel or the charming Leaf Satchel, with your choice of leaf flap styles. You'll learn:

Wayfarer Shoes - footwear is another one of those categories that may feel a bit magical, like... "really, I can sew shoes?" Yes, if you can sew around curves, you can sew shoes! Available in tiny baby to adult sizes. You'll learn how to:
  • sew fully-lined, soft-soled shoes
  • make fitting adjustments for feet of different shapes and sizes


With practice, you'll feel confident taking on a variety of sewing projects - garments for children and adults, accessories like hats, bags, and slippers, and whimsical playthings.
