What is a pattern Add On? A guide to getting even more versatility from your T+T patterns

Have you ever perused the Twig + Tale® sewing pattern collection, and noticed the patterns labelled as "add-ons"? Here's a look at what they are, and how they can be used to add extra versatility to your T+T patterns. Just a little change - a different pocket, sleeve, or fun animal detail - can create a completely different look!

Generally speaking, an "add-on" is a PDF pattern, sold separately, but intended to enhance or change another pattern in the T+T collection. As such, they are not standalone patterns intended to make a complete garment. Instead, they pair with their corresponding pattern to transform it into something new, or add additional function (or fun!) to it.

These transformations can happen in a variety of ways. Some add-ons, like the Crossroads Vest and Sprig Sleeve add-ons, replace some of the pieces in the original pattern to introduce different style options. Others, like the Pocket Pack and Nestledown Add-ons, are simply additions to the original pattern that you can use in a variety of ways.

Some add-ons are a mixture of both - for instance the Animal Add-on has pieces which replace the original hoods in the vests, coats, and capes, while also adding the Animal Elements; while the Fishing Vest replaces the front vest pieces, while also adding the pocket options. Pretty neat, right?

By using these add-ons, the patterns in your collection take on additional versatility, at a fraction of the cost of buying multiple complete patterns. Some of these add-ons will be pattern-specific, while others will be usable on whatever projects you can imagine.

FAQs about add-ons

How can I tell which pattern an add-on belongs to?

In every add-on listing, the "main" pattern it is intended for use with will be clearly denoted in the listing name as "for (pattern name)", as well as the add-on blurb, views, etc. Buying the main pattern will be necessary to use the add-on, as the add-ons will not contain all of the pattern pieces or tutorial to make a complete garment.

If an add-on is listed for one pattern, can I use it for another?

Generally speaking, most add-ons will not be cross-compatible between different patterns, as many of the pattern markings, instructions, etc. will not match up. You may be able to adapt them to use with other patterns, but we cannot guarantee they will work.

The add-on I am considering doesn't indicate a "main" pattern - can I use it with any pattern, then?

Yes, in the case of options like the Pocket Pack Add-on, they are not intended for one specific pattern, and can be used anywhere that you can imagine them.
