Suggested Fabrics for Trailblazer

(Scroll to the bottom for Fisherman's Vest + Nestledown Baby Carry Cover Add-ons )
Exterior: Wool, wool blends, corduroy, denim, pre-quilted cottons, canvas, cotton drill, suede and oilskin are all suitable fabrics. You could use quilting cottons for a spring weight vest or quilt an extra layer in between the exterior and lining fabric for extra warmth.  If you wanted a puffer-style vest, then polyester or nylon with batting quilted onto it works well.

Lining: Traditionally you would use a slippery fabric for lining; however, cotton, linen, and flannel work well too. Sherpa is also a deliciously snuggly lining fabric. If using a lightweight exterior fabric, you could use pre-quilted polyester lining to provide extra warmth.

Please note:  It is NOT recommended to use thick fabrics for both lining and exterior, particularly if you are adding the wind flap as certain areas could become too thick to easily sew through.  **You may need to size up if using batting, or using a thick fabric lining such as sherpa.

Other Supplies & Notions

  • Buttons or snaps if you do not wish to close with a zipper or are adding the wind flap
  • Separating zipper (opens completely at both ends)
    Sizes 32-48 = 26” (66cm) zipper     Sizes 50-60 = 28” (71cm) zipper
  • Batting if you wish to make a puffer-style vest
  • Small strip of interfacing to stabilise the front (zipper) edge if using stretchy fabric

Fabric Requirement Chart

You will need the following amounts for both the exterior and the lining fabrics.  You may need more if matching plaids/checks or if you have a directional fabric.  If adding batting for a puffer-style vest, then you will need the same amount of that too.

For the Fisherman's Add-on you will need an extra 16" (40cm) of fabric.

Fisherman's Vest Add-on

If making a Fisherman's Vest (using the Fisherman's Add-on) then lightweight, strong fabrics are best, such as cotton, cotton drill, and lightweight canvas.  The pockets will become challenging to sew if made in a heavier-weight fabric.

For the Fisherman's Add-on you will need an extra 16" (40cm) of fabric for the pockets, in addition to the fabric requirements of the Trailblazer Vest.

Nestledown - Baby/Toddler Carry Cover Add-on

You will need everything for a Trailblazer Vest ...  and...
  • Elastic 3/4” (2cm) wide - approx 25” (60cm)
  • An 18" (46cm) separating zipper (opens completely at both ends) which matches exactly the teeth size/brand of the zipper used for the Trailblazer Vest so that they will zip up together.
  • You will need an extra 1/2 yd (0.5m) of fabric for the carry panel.
