Suggested Fabrics
This pattern is versatile in terms of fabrics used and is a great way to use up scrap fabric or to upcycle garments to give them a new lease on life. Different materials can affect the look and structure of the shoe, so it is worth making a test pair in some scrap fabric to get a feel for what is going to work best for your needs, whether it is a pair of lightweight indoor shoes for summer or thicker, cosier slippers for winter.
Exterior: Lightweight to medium weight woven fabrics such as quilting cotton, linen, chambray, canvas, cotton duck, cotton drill, and wool. Wool is an ideal fabric for these shoes as it "eases" well, particularly around the toe area. Denim, though a great hardwearing fabric, would need to be soft enough to be gathered.
Lining: Lightweight to medium weight cotton. Organic cotton sherpa is another option, but it has a little stretch, making it more challenging to sew.
Sole Insoles: You could use the same fabric as the shoe lining. Another lovely option here is a felted sweater, woolen blanket, or other cosy fabric. If desired, you could also add an extra layer of wadding or felted wool in between the exterior and lining soles for some extra cushioning.
Sole Exterior: Choose a low-slip option such as suede, leather, or a sole fabric with little "bubbles" on it to prevent slipping. You could also apply an anti-slip product to denim or other similar sturdy fabrics to prevent slipping. Some have used Toughtek® fabric for a harder-wearing option. Although the Wayfarer is intended as an indoor shoe, some have successfully glued on Vibram soles to create a barefoot-style outdoor shoe.
