Suggested Fabrics for Trailblazer

(Scroll to the bottom for Nestledown Maternity/Baby Carry Cover Add-ons )

Exterior: Wool, wool blends, corduroy, denim, pre-quilted cottons, canvas, cotton drill, suede and oil skin are all suitable fabrics. You could use quilting cottons for a spring weight vest or quilt an extra layer in between the exterior and lining fabric for extra warmth.  If you wanted a puffer-style vest, then polyester or nylon with batting quilted onto it works well.  A number of tester had good results using anti-pill fleece in place of batting.
Please note:  It is NOT recommended to use thick fabrics for both lining and exterior as it may be challenging to sew through certain areas.

Lining: Traditionally you would use a slippery fabric for lining; however, cotton, linen and flannel work well too. Sherpa is also a deliciously snugly lining fabric. If using a lightweight exterior fabric, you could use pre-quilted polyester lining to provide extra warmth.

Other Supplies & Notions

  • Buttons or snaps if you do not wish to close with a zipper or are adding the wind flap
  • Separating zipper (opens completely at both ends)
    Regular Version   Sizes a-e = 22” (56cm) zipper    Sizes f-j = 24” (61cm) zipper  Sizes k-n = 26” (66cm) zipper
  • Collar-less version Size a = 18” (46cm) zipper  Sizes b-i = 20” (51cm) zipper Sizes j-l = 22” (56cm) zipper  Sizes m-n = 24” (61cm) zipper
  • Batting if you wish to make a puffer-style vest
  • Small strip of interfacing to stabilise the front (zipper) edge if using stretchy fabric

Fabric Requirement Chart

You will need the following amounts for both the exterior and the lining fabrics.  You may need more if matching plaids/checks or if you have a directional fabric.  If adding batting for a puffer-style vest, then you will need the same amount of that too.

  • Elastic 3/4” (2cm) wide - approx 25” (60cm)
  • Separating zipper (opens completely at both ends) which matches exactly the teeth size/brand of the zipper used for the Trailblazer Vest so that they will zip up together.  For baby’s comfort, choosing zippers with plastic rather than metal teeth for the carry cover panel is recommended.  (Please keep in mind that adding length to your vest will require longer zippers.)
