The two panels, for baby-wearing and pregnancy, can be removed when not required for a truly versatile garment.

  • Carry panels - Sized for both baby and toddler, with optional wind collars to keep little ones cosy.
  • Pregnancy panel - wear your Forester coat through pregnancy to birth, no need for a specific pregnancy coat, just zip in the panel when required!
Nestledown Baby Wearing + Pregnancy Coat Sewing Pattern by Twig + Tale

This is an add-on to the adult Forester Coat patterns.  You need to either own one of the Forester Coat patterns, or purchase the bundle using the dropdown menu for all the required pattern pieces for the coat itself.

Please note: The Nestledown Add-on is not a stand alone carrier. The coat must be worn combined with a front wearing carrier as it does NOT hold the baby on its own!

    Nestledown FAQ

    Will this panel hold baby?
Absolutely not.  The Nestledown Add-on is not a stand alone carrier. The coat must be worn combined with a front wearing carrier as it does NOT hold the baby on its own.  This panel is purely an extra layer of warmth.

Can I convert the Forester to be a "back-wearing" garment?
There is no official hack for this, but it could be done. We have a blogpost detailing how to convert the Trailblazer Vest here to give you an idea of the concept:  How to convert the Nestledown for Back Wearing

Can I wear the coat "as a coat" if not carrying baby?
Yes, simply zip out the panel, and you have a cosy Forester Coat.

I don't want to sew a garment just for pregnancy - can I wear it afterwards?
Yes. Nestledown is designed to see you through pregnancy and baby-wearing. You simply zip the panels out when not required and you have a regular Trailblazer Vest.  Sew the Trailblazer Vest in your regular size, as the Nestledown panels create the extra width required for pregnancy.  No wasted sewing!

Can I use the Nestledown add-ons interchangeably between Coat and Vest?
No, each add-on is designed specifically as the Forester and Trailblazer have different lengths etc.

    Great pattern

Really great pattern. I used it to do a rain coat in softshell to carry baby in front and back.
No linen so I haven’t follow all instructions but very easy to understand when I looked at it.
For the back zip I used a post of the blog but for the vest so I had to adapt and I haven’t been really good ... too low

But I will definitely do another coat. Love the shape !

    Fun innovative pattern

I found the design creative and fun. My daughter-in-law selected this, and I only had to fit a couple of seams for her and our new Grandboy! Instructions were clear, concise - a pleasure to sew.

    Amazing

I absolutley love this pattern. I’m still a beginner, perhaps an advanced beginner now, and it was a breeze to do. The fb chat group are so helpful and the tutorials come with videos as well, which I found incredibly helpful. First time sewing zips and it all went sew well (sorry haha) ! Highly recommend this pattern along with the trailblazer vest. Added bonus of panel being removed if you’re not baby wearing x

    A must!

I have worn both of my children but hadn't found a stylish vest that is comfortable and fits well. The nestledown first like a glove. It's comfortable, fitted and oh so cozy. And a breeze to sew!
