Add extra pockets to any outfit with a handy, historically-inspired tie-on pocket. This style of pocket was popularly used from the 17th to 19th centuries, and while our modern clothes have evolved to have pockets sewn in, we're of the opinion that you can never have too many pockets!

Choose from three pocket sizes, three shapes, and options for a bound tie, a casing and tie, or bonus belt loops. Perfect for toting daily necessities, sewing notions, or perhaps a small knitting project.

A beautiful, practical accessory that brings historical charm to modern life.

All fabric requirement amounts are the same for both exterior and lining fabrics - you will need the amount listed in the chart below for both exterior and lining. If using the same fabric for exterior and lining, double the fabric requirement.

You may need more fabric if matching plaids or checks, or using a directional fabric.

Note: if making the Bonus Belt Loop option, no extra fabric is required.

Suggested Fabrics

For exterior: midweight linen or cotton, hemp, chambray, lightweight canvas, lightweight denim, lightweight leather, lightweight twill, velveteen, wool suiting, lightweight corduroy (needlecord, pin cord, or pinwale), brushed cotton.

For lining: midweight linen or cotton, rayon, Tencel, quilting cotton, hemp, chambray, brushed cotton.

Other Supplies & Notions
  • Spool of coordinating thread
  • Optional for bonus belt loops: medium weight fusible interfacing (woven or knit will give the most structure, but non-woven will work as well)
  • Optional for adding embroidery: embroidery floss and needles

Epoch Tie-on Pocket

  • Three styles: Droplet (vertical slit), Willow (horizontal opening), and Tulip (overlap pocket)
  • Three sizes: Small, medium, and large, with sized waist tie (size 1-4)
  • Bound waist tie or moveable encased waist tie
  • Bonus: belt loops for attaching the pocket to a belt
  • Fully lined for a neat finish

Make old things new again! Twig & Tale patterns pair wonderfully with upcycled fabrics.

Look to woven cotton or linen shirts, linen skirts or trousers. Vintage embroidered linens, such as tablecloths, napkins, or tray cloths would make lovely pockets.

    Vacation accessory extraordinaire!

Made this with the intention of using it while on a cruise later this year. Small size fit a book, sunscreen, phone and sunglasses handily. Next iteration I might add a small interior pocket and sew a glasses cleaning cloth into the seam of the outer tulip petal.

This is my first project with a pattern and I found the directions to print and use the pdf easy to follow. It’s also the second object I’ve ever made, and perhaps my fifth or sixth time using my sewing machine. Very beginner friendly, don’t go all out around the curves and you’ll be fine. I also intend to follow the directions on grain for my second pocket, my first is a mix of orientations and slightly wonky.

I can't wait to make more!

This pattern is wonderful. Very well written, and the video tutorial was super helpful. I love my pocket, and can't wait to make more.

    Lovely pattern

Beautifully executed both in the PDFs and video. My only issues arose when I departed from the instructions! I’d love an add-on for a regular cross-body strap. Will be making several for various uses. Lends itself to quilting and machine embroidery as well as handwork. Thanks for the quality.

    Epoch tie pocket.

A great pattern. Only tried one of the designs so far. I made them from waterproof canvas as gardening pockets to stop me loosing secateurs & string in the back of the border. It works a treat for the job.

You can never have too many pockets

The Epoch pocket is easy, fast and fun to sew and is so customizable. It’s a great scrap buster and the perfect canvas for embroidery or applique. It’s also so practical and adds a bit of flourish to any outfit.

    easy to follow

I purchased this pattern with no sewing experience to make my mum a pocket as a surprise because her skirts don't have any pockets (a tragedy). I was able to follow the instructions unaided and hand sew the tulip pocket. It looked good even though I my stitching was wobbly and I accidentally skipped a step in the instructions!

The Epoch is a really cute option: It’s a simple and satisfying sew that can be made relatively quickly and uses up scraps. The projector file is fantastic and tutorial detailed. I made the tulip pocket and I love the bonus smaller pocket in its design.

    Perfect travel companion

When I made my first pocket I thought it would be just a useful extra pocket when sat sewing but then I took it on a visit to London and found it was a game changer.
It is perfect for keeping your phone to hand but in a safe place when travelling, it is a great receptacle for my reading specs when I need to be constantly taking them on and off and was perfect for having travel passes and museum tickets to hand .
These are such a lovely personal thing to make and I appreciated the different styles that were provided in the pattern.

    Love it!

This is just so much fun. To sew and to wear! And when you wear it, everything you put in there will instantly become very mysterious.. even though it's just your child's dirty socks..

    Handy on the go!

This is such a lovey thing to take with you when out and about. It’s easy to slide on a belt to tie on, it’s roomy, and even comes in handy when I’m too tired to go out, but want to have some crafting stuff with me on the couch without having it everywhere. Love it!
