Perfect for imaginative play

I made both my children a pair of dragon wings for the Samhain festival. They loved them and still really enjoy wearing them for imaginative play all the time

Not as difficult to sew as I expected

I found the Woodland Sprite Wings uncomplicated to sew thanks to the detailed directions and helpful videos. The way the opening of the wings is closed is brilliant forming a solid “spine” to give the wings a natural shape. If you are reluctant at all to try this pattern because it seems too daunting; I encourage you to give it a go taking your time and following the videos as needed. You don’t have to get too fancy and it is a wonderful way to use up smaller pieces of left-over fabrics from other projects.

Beautiful

I love these wings, they’re so Beautiful, my daughter also loves them. The instructions (like with all other Twig and Tale patterns) are great and easy to follow.

My only advice is to make sure you read all the instructions before you start and make sure you have the right materials. I didn’t and thought I could “make do” with some alternatives. While the end result is still fine. It was frustrating and I broke 3 machine needles. Lesson learnt haha.

woodland sprite

I made the small and medium size wings, starting with the small first. The wings were hard to turn out especially the bottom wing tips, so with the medium wings I took some interfacing off the bottom two peaks either side, the same as the top tips which helped a lot. The other problem I had was doing the back seam in step 59where my machine would not go through the layer even though I trimmed back in step 32, with the next size I trimmed 1/4 inch off the batting either side before quilting the layers together this made sewing step 59 seam a lot easier. y was fun making them hopefully my grand daughters will like them at Christmas.

Amazing

I ummmed and ahhhed for a while with this pattern. I wasn't sure I'd be able to pull it off - I've never been any quilting or applique. I am very pleased to report that the dragon wings turned out brilliantly! The kids adore them and they receive compliments from adults too. The pattern was very easy to follow. The only thing I struggled with was sourcing materials (thick interfacing and batting), but that was user error and some websites not being detailed enough for me to gauge whether the materials fit the requirements. :) I recommend this pattern! :)

fun to sew

These wings were fun, if fiddly, to sew. No particular skills necessary other than patience I think. My stitch lines don't really line up but I just don't think it matters too much for play wings. I have made two sets and the smaller one was definitely more fiddly to turn through. Using a walking foot helped sew the layers. I have cut out another set ready to sew but need clear head space before starting!! I used scraps of fabric from dresses I'd already sewn for my granddaughter. This was my intro pattern to T&T - my pattern library is now pretty full!!! I love the T&T helpful approach. The videos, pictures, instructions are so clear and helpful. More than that, though, is the wonderful sense of community T&T fosters amongst its followers.

Fun project

I absolutely loved the clear instructions. It turned out exactly how I wanted. I used vlieseline S320 as interfacing and dacron 200 g as batting. It’s stiff enough but it was still easy to sew. Thank you for this fun pattern, I’ll be making more wings for sure!

This pattern was incredibly detailed and easy to follow.

I would prefer the fabric measurements to include by the yard. I typically only purchase what I need and don't have a big stash of fabrics besides some small pieces that I use for sample stitches. As a result I ended up buying far more fabric than I needed for this project. I used the same fabric for the front and back- I would recommend choosing different fabrics for more contrast.

If I make these again I will interface both the front and back of the tails. I realize this will be harder to turn, but they are just a little too floppy for me.

I used a satin stitch for the appliques. It's a bit messy since it was my first attempt but overall I think it looks better than a zigzag.
