Leaf Satchel
A simple, practical satchel with a charming leaf flap detail, to accompany you on afternoon strolls and everyday adventures. There are two sizes included, perfect to hold essentials like a sketchbook, pencils, and snack, with enough space to stash found treasures along the way.
For children and adults, the satchel features an adjustable strap to wear over the shoulder or cross-body, an internal pocket, and a security band to keep belongings safe.
The Leaf Satchel is easy to sew - no previous bag-making experience needed!

Fabric Requirements - Portrait
You may need more fabric if matching plaids or checks, or using a directional fabric.
- Spool of coordinating thread
- Elastic (elasticated security band option only) - 8-14" (20-35cm) of 3/8" (1cm) to 7/8" (2cm) knitted elastic, or similar midweight elastic
- Batting/Wadding
- Hardware (optional). Either x2 three bar sliders, or x1 two bar and x1 three bar sliders. A D-ring can also be used in place of the x1 two bar slider. Use 2" (5cm) hardware for the Wide Strap + Loop. Use 1.5" (38mm) hardware for the narrower Strap + Loop.
- Interfacing (optional) to reinforce and add more structure. A fusible woven or knit interfacing is the most durable option.

Make old things new again! Twig & Tale patterns pair wonderfully with recycled fabrics. Linen trousers and shirts make a lovely lightweight satchel. Worn corduroy, cotton twill, or chambray trousers can be pieced to make a satchel - try re-using pockets too for a neat detail.

I've had my eye on this pattern for a while now. Sewed it up a couple weeks ago and am quite pleased with the result. I used an Essex Yarn Dyed cotton-linen (in the colour 'army') and with a medium-weight interfacing for additional structure (no interfacing for the security band). Evend up trimming the interfacing back to the seam allowances to reduce bulk. It was a bit fiddly for a bit, but it did work out in the end. As shown in one photo, I ended up basting the batting to the lining, which worked out great for holding things together when turning. One of my back corners is a bit lumpy and wrinkly, but otherwise everything looks good. Next time around, I'll try to figure out a cleaner method (maybe better pinning on my part?) for attaching the back to the side lining. Also, I might add some sort of button or clasp to the internal pocket as I've noticed it tends to gape and fall forward. I made the small portrait, which seems to be quite a good size for carrying around a small water bottle, a notebook, pen, my wallet, grocery list, and such.
I am an intermediate sewist and I had a lovely time putting together the lead satchel. I used a corduroy for the exterior and cotton for the lining and it turned out so cute! The instructions were very clear and it was relatively quick to come together. Thank you!
I was so happy at how quickly and beautifully this project came together. The solid back of the bag provided a great canvas for a bit of fun appliqué to personalize this as a gift for a coworker. I am certain I will be making many more versions of this in the future!

I tested this pattern with no previous bag-making experience and loved every step; which is good, because I have a dozen niblings in queue for a leaf bag of their own! T+T patterns are sheer joy.
I tested this pattern and despite not being a fan of bag making, I found the instructions straight forward but more importantly the construction was painless with no issues using any fabric from waxed cotton to thick boiled wool.
This satchel feels like home. I have never had a bag that I truly felt suited me, my personality and style, as well as this one does. I've already made two versions, and I am dreaming of a third. As always, the instructions are fantastic with both text, images and video, which guide you through even the tricky parts with ease. Cannot recommend this pattern enough.
