Post-mastectomy pattern and fitting resources

Sewing clothing that fits well and feels comfortable after a mastectomy can be challenging. Whether you're sewing for yourself or someone you care about, creating garments that prioritise comfort, ease of dressing, and proper fit can make such an important difference in daily life.

This roundup brings together all the Twig + Tale resources for post-mastectomy sewing, including patterns with pre-adjusted pieces for a unilateral or bilateral flat front, as well as fitting resources for adjusting patterns.

Remember, every person's needs are different, and what works for one may not work for another. Take what's helpful from these resources and adapt them to your specific situation and preferences. If you have questions about making pattern adjustments to fit your body, we're happy to help.

Post-mastectomy pattern fitting resources

How to lower an armhole for swelling or sensitivity - Use this adjustment with set-in or raglan sleeves to create more ease in the underarm area. This is particularly useful for those with swelling or general sensitivity under the arm.

How to do a forward shoulder adjustment on a garment with a set-in sleeve - Use this adjustment to refine the shoulder seam placement for a better fit. Can be especially helpful to accommodate post-mastectomy changes in posture.

How to do a forward shoulder adjustment on a garment with a raglan sleeve - As above, but for a raglan sleeve.

How to do a Small Bust Adjustment on a garment with bust darts - A useful adjustment for a "flat" side that is not completely flat. For example, the Plains Dress pictured below used an SBA on one side to get a balanced fit.
